Dutch Occupation (1849-1946)
The Dutch colonial government in 1849 built a high school of health sciences. In January 1851 the school was officially named as Dokter-Djawa School. This high school specializes in medical science, specifically the education of mantri personnel. After experiencing a name change at the end of the 19th century, to be precise in 1898, the name Dokter-Djawa School changed to School tot Opleiding van Indische Artsen (School of Medicine for Indigenous Doctors) or also known as STOVIA. For 75 years STOVIA served as the best educational place for aspiring doctors in Indonesia, before being closed in 1927. However, a Medical School was later built along with four other high schools in several cities in Java.
These high schools were Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng (Faculty of Engineering) which was established in Bandung in 1920, Recht Hoogeschool (Faculty of Law) in Batavia in 1924, Faculteit der Letteren en Wijsbegeerte (Faculty of Letters and Humanities) in Batavia in 1940, and a year later they were built Faculteit van Landbouwweteschap (Faculty of Agriculture) in Bogor. These five high schools were pillars in creating the Nood-universiteit (Emergency University), which was built in 1946.
The Age of Independence (1947-1960s)
Nood-universiteit changed its name to Universiteit van Indonesië in 1947 and is based in Jakarta. Several nationalist professors, one of whom is Prof. Mr. Djokosoetono, continued his function as a lecturer for Universiteit van Indonesië in Yogyakarta, which was then the nation’s capital.
The Indonesian capital then returned to Jakarta in 1949 after the Dutch recognized the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia. Universiteit van Indonesië Yogyakarta also moved to Jakarta.
Universiteit van Indonesië was later merged into “Universiteit Indonesia” in 1950. The university has a Faculty of Medicine, Law, Letters and Philosophy in Jakarta, a Faculty of Engineering located in Bandung, a Faculty of Agriculture in Bogor, a Faculty of Dentistry in Surabaya, and a Faculty of Economics in Makassar. .
Faculties outside Jakarta then developed into separate universities between 1954-1963. The University of Indonesia in Jakarta has a campus in Salemba and consists of several faculties such as: Medicine, Dentistry, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Literature, Law, Economics, and Engineering.
In subsequent developments, the Faculty of Psychology, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Public Health, Computer Science and then the Faculty of Nursing were established.
Modern Age (1970s-present)
Before the University of Indonesia campus in Depok was built in 1987, the University of Indonesia had three campus locations, namely in Salemba, East Pegangsaan and Rawamangun. After the new campus was established on an area of 320 hectares in Depok, the Rawamangun campus which includes several faculties was moved, while the Salemba campus was still maintained for the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry and the Postgraduate Program.
Not long after 2000, the University of Indonesia became one of several universities that had the status of a State-Owned Legal Entity in Indonesia. This change in status brings significant changes for the University of Indonesia, namely greater autonomy in academic development and financial management.
From this historical perspective, the University of Indonesia has progressively grown into an institution that aims to become a leader in the fields of humanity and civilization by balancing academic values, morality and the arts. Through these advantages, the University of Indonesia intends to produce the Indonesian nation into a more prosperous and democratic society, with a focus on peace, justice and strong environmental values.
In the reform era, the government assessed that UI had sufficient management capabilities to gain greater independence, autonomy, and responsibility in acting as a moral force that supports national development. Based on this, the government issued PP No. 152/2000 which established the University of Indonesia as a State-Owned Legal Entity (BHMN). During the implementation of UI as a BHMN, the government issued several important policies such as Law no. 20/2003 on the National Education System and Government Regulation No. 19/2005 concerning National Education Standards which in some aspects have not fully supported the smooth implementation of UI as a BHMN.
In the last ten years, the dynamics of internal and external developments surrounding UI have had a profound impact on the ups and downs of UI’s condition. Among them are the ratification by the government of Law no 12/2012 on Higher Education which later became the auspices for UI’s legal status. According to the law, BHMN Universities and Small Universities
GGi BHMN which has turned into a Higher Education organized by the Government with the pattern of financial management of the Public Service Agency, is designated as a Legal Entity Higher Education (PTN-BH). The implementation of the Law, particularly Article 66 paragraph (2), led to the stipulation of PP No. 68/2013 concerning the Statute of the University of Indonesia (UI Statute).
Currently UI consists of 13 Faculties, Postgraduate Programs and Vocational Programs. The thirteen faculties are the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Engineering, Psychology, Social and Political Sciences, Law, Economics, Public Health, Cultural Sciences, Computer Science. There are currently 291 study programs at UI, with 47,166 students and 309 foreign students participating in degree and non-degree programs.
